I got one of these and it’s the dogs nads. So much better than the Netgear SC101

The only thing going for the SC101 now, is that it appears to be fairly stable. At last.

I wouldn’t buy one again though.

Turning on/off ssh through the web

November 6th, 2006

I’ve found that if I leave ssh turned on, that I get loads of hacking attempts.

So what I’ve done is create a small web page which runs a small cgi script that turns on ssh for 30 seconds. After this 30 seconds, it turns ssh off. This is enough time to login through putty (or other ssh clients)

I’ll post this little script up, when I have the time.

Someone tried to contact me about this, saying that I could change the port number in my ssh config. Well, I do know this, but my problem would then be the fact that I couldn’t access it from work. So port 22 had to be the one.

Netgear SC101

September 1st, 2006

I’ve just bought one of these:

SC101

and have added two 320Gb Seagate Barracuda drives.

It’s a nice little bit of kit, but considering the reviews I read, I’ll only be using it for data backup. Which isn’t a problem anyway, as this was the use I intended it for.

The only problem that I did have was the firmware upgrade on the device. I couldn’t tell if this was due to the size of the disks or not. Googling didn’t come up with any information.

This little thing...

Your iPAQ 5550 won't turn on?

January 25th, 2006

Here’s the URL that helped me out.

5550 Wont turn on (help?) [Archive] - MobilitySite Forums

The reason that I’ve gone back to my iPAQ 5550, is that the Orange M2000 that I’ve got, is a pile of sh**e. The GPRS part of the phone is crap and despite the fact that Orange (France) have changed the phone 5 times, it still plays silly buggers and GPRS connections are hit and miss. Anyway, going back to the 5550. The basic way to reset it, if the batteries (both internal and external) are dead, is to do the following:

  • Remove the battery from the Ipaq.
  • Hold the reset button for 5 seconds.
  • Place the battery back in the Ipaq.
  • Hold the reset button for 5 seconds.
  • Plug the charger into the Ipaq.

Another way of resetting the iPAQ is as follows (NOTE: I’ve not tested this one,as the first procedure works fine for me):

  • Apply an 8hr charge then before continuing do the following.
  • Remove the battery and soft reset, then reinsert the battery and follow the fix below
  • Charge the unit for 30 minutes (not more not less) only powered by ac adapter and 22 pin connector and not connected to the pc/cradle (make sure the unit is switched/powered off )
  • Remove the power and full hardware reset and the s/w reset. Another hardware reset is to press the bottom two buttons on the unit and by inserting the stylo into the reset hole.
  • Charge the unit again for 4 hours connected to ac power only and the battery should have calibrated itself (make sure the unit is switched/powered off then after the 4hrs soft reset)

[EDIT: 31/12/09] Well the URLs were there before, but now they’re gone.

Not a problem. One thing to add is that if the 5550 is really, really dead, you may need to stick it in the charger for 5-10 minutes before executing the procedure at the top of this post.
